Athletic training often requires you to be explosive during a short period of time. Nothing trains the body better for explosive action than anaerobic exercise. If you are unfamiliar with anaerobic training, it’s understandable. People hear about aerobic exercises more often. Anaerobic training is another kind of cardiovascular exercise that focuses more on high-intensity.

While aerobic exercises involve using oxygen to perform, anaerobic is quite the opposite. This type of training requires pushing your body to a point where it demands more oxygen than what is available. When the body is at this point, it uses a different energy source from the muscles. Let’s find out what makes anaerobic exercises beneficial to athletes.

Anaerobic Exercise Builds Performance

The point of doing anaerobic training is to get your body used to perform its best as quickly as possible. Normally, with aerobics, your pace is determined by how much oxygen you consume. For anaerobic, your body adapts to going 100 percent at the start. It is not dependent on oxygen and can perform without it.

The drawback of anaerobic exercise is that the energy you produce doesn’t last very long. That’s because the energy also produces lactic acid, which causes muscle fatigue. That’s why conditioning your body this way is better for sports like football, where you have to push yourself hard for a couple of minutes at a time. However, with proper training, your body can become used to the lactic acid and fight off fatigue.

Benefits of High-Intensity Training

There are several benefits to conditioning your body with anaerobic. The first benefit is that these exercises are great for building muscle strength and mass. Another positive aspect of this training is that you’ll be able to improve the amount of oxygen your body can take in during intense exercise. There is even evidence that anaerobic exercise contributes to a leaner body and less belly fat.

Anaerobic Exercises That You Can Do

The overall goal of your training is to adapt to the amount of lactic acid your body is producing. Here are a couple of exercises you should try:

  • Weight Lifting – Lifting heavy weights is the best way to build your muscles and perform anaerobic exercises. With the repetitions of weight lifting, you stimulate the muscle without the use of oxygen. You’ll be able to train those muscles to handle the strain and push past the limits of fatigue.
  • Sprints – Sprints are a great test for pushing your body without the necessary oxygen available. You basically run as fast as you can for 30 seconds, exerting as much energy as you can, then transition to a light jog until you can run again. The more you practice, the longer you will be able to run at maximum speed.
  • Pushups – The great thing about push-ups is that they require you to hold up most of your body’s weight. As you perform the exercise, you’ll feel your weight as it targets the upper body. The faster you do pushups, the more you’ll get out of your workout.
